Several years ago I found out worm compost (vermicompost) was the best compost available to brew my compost tea. There is a specific type of worms that love to feed on food waste. They are called Red wigglers. These worms can eat their own weight in food in just a couple of weeks, so instead of disposing all the food waste in the garbage every day, you can use that food waste to feed your worms. In my home we produce close to 20 pounds of food waste every week, so I roughly have 10 pounds of worms in my basement inside their worm bin. Since we now recycle all the food waste, we have decreased the quantity of garbage by almost 75%. I now realize how much food we used to throw away.
Vermicompost is probably the best compost you can get
There are a couple of ways to turn food waste into compost. The first way is to use a compost tumbler. The compost bin should be turned weekly. By turning the bin regularly it will add oxygen, encouraging bacteria to feed on the food waste. It usually takes several months for the food to be totally digested by the bacteria. The second way is to use red worms to digest that food waste. It normally takes 1 week for all the food to disappear, and turn into compost. The reason vermicompost is good, is because it is fully digested so there is no weed seed, no pathogens. Vermicompost is a great source of nutrients for your plants. It contains most of the microbiology necessary for the plants to thrive.
Red worms can eat basically anything you give them except, meat, fish, oils and dairy products.
I have used a product called Can-O-Worms. Very easy to clean. And the worms seem to like it in there. The whole setup is basically several trays that form a tower. The worms feed and live in one tray while food is being supplied. Once, the tray is full of vermicompost, another tray is placed on top with additional food. The worms migrate from the lower tray, to the upper tray. So, there is no mess, and no need to touch those worms. The end result, is that you have fresh compost that you can use regularly to feed your plants, or you can also use it to brew compost tea.
Give it a try. It is fun. You can use all your food waste to feed the worms, and have an incredible source of compost for your plants.
